This weekend seemed to be dominated by owls. Firstly I found two Long-eared Owl chicks in one of our Kestrel boxes (in the north of the county), then in a Barn Owl box (that had been unused for at least 10 years) just north of Rhayader there were 5 very healthy Barn Owl chicks, and Tawny Owls seem to be just about every where – Rhayader, Bwlch-y-Sarnau, Llaithddu and Llandrindod (at least 12 different birds observed!).

Other notable sighting included at least 7 Pairs of Curlew between Hirnant and Pont-ar-Elan, 3 Cuckoos, 2 Crossbills and a Polecat at Bwlch-y-Sarnau and a Hedgehog at Llaithddu.

A pair of Garganey were reported at Bwlch-y-Fedwen Pools (SO095598) on Friday and Saturday, but no sign of them yesterday unfortunately!

  1. Blimey! I’m glad someone’s having fun-& 7pairs of Curlew???Did you mean 2? The Long -eareds look fantastic.Well done you.

  2. Great stuff with cute factor 10 🙂

  3. Definitely at least 7 pairs Kev, at least 3 of them have chicks.

  4. Amazing!Wish the damn weather would sort itself and we might get out!

  5. Great pics……. and great news on the curlew count!

  6. Forgot to say ……. 3 tawny owl chicks successfully fledged from my owl box in the garden ….Newbridge on Wye
